ARLINGTON, Texas- In the final game of the 2012 regular season, UT Arlington cruised to a straight set victory over Louisiana Tech on Thursday night at College Park Center. With the win, UTA clinches the final position in the WAC tournament and a match-up with Utah State on Nov. 19 in the first round in San Antonio at 7:30 p.m.
The Mavericks opened up the first set looking comfortable and in control. The Mavs scored five of the matches’ first six points on its way to cruising through the first set. A large part of why UTA was successful was in the front lines. The Mavericks controlled the tempo and blocked any attempts by the Techsters to gain momentum. The Mavericks had four team blocks in the set, including three from Charmaine Whitmore on the way to win the opening set 25-15.
The second set played out much like the first with UTA in early control. The Mavs scored the first three in the set and then went on a run of six to pull away from Louisiana Tech. Taylor Gross came alive for the Mavericks and led UTA with five kills on offense before Whitmore added another block to close out the set to give UTA a 25-14 set win.
UTA would be tested in a closely played third set. Louisiana Tech stayed competitive in the third by scoring its match-high five consecutive points to draw even at 15 but UTA proved to be too strong. The Mavs scored four straight points behind Taylor Gross’ tenth kill of the match and a front line that continued to prevent the Techsters offense from gaining any momentum. UTA pulled ahead to take a 23-20 lead and then Taylor Gross overpowered the defense for a kill and again down the right side to seal the set victory 25-21.
