MONROE, Louisiana – UT Arlington volleyball defeated UL Monroe on Saturday night in its final Sun Belt Conference regular-season match of the year.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 17-14 overall and 10-8 in SBC play.
Middle blockers Ashley Bennett and Charmaine Whitmore along with outside hitter Hannah Baptiste led the offense with a team-high nine kills each. Sophomore defensive specialist Caitlyn Cooney led the defense with 20 digs in the match.
Freshman setter Cassidy Wheeler recorded a team-high two aces and was tied with junior setter Amanda Welsh with 20 assists in the victory. Whitmore was a wall at the net with seven total blocks, all assisted, on the night. Bennett was also the most effective hitter with a .600 attack percentage.
The Mavericks and Warhawks exchanged points early on in the first set until UTA pulled away with a 10-7 lead. Timely kills and strong serving brought ULM back in the set at 18-18. A combination block from Whitmore and Welsh forced extra points in the first set but the Warhawks would take the first set on two straight points, 26-24.
UL Monroe brought its momentum from set one to start the second set with a quick 5-3 lead. UT Arlington responded to take a 9-6 lead and force an early Warhawk timeout. The Mavericks continued to roll behind strong serving and stretched their lead to eight, 16-8. UTA would tie up the match with a 25-14 win in set two.
Set three began with a back-and-forth battle until the Mavs pulled away with a nine point, 16-7, lead. ULM chipped away and forced a UTA timeout at 18-13. Warhawk attack errors would give the Mavericks the third set, 25-16.
UT Arlington kept a small, two-point lead over UL Monroe for much of the beginning of set four, 14-12. Solid defense helped double the Maverick lead at 17-13 and forced a Warhawk timeout. UTA never looked back and won the fourth set 25-20.
With the win, UT Arlington will be the fourth seed going into the Sun Belt Volleyball Championship to take place in Troy, Ala. The Mavericks will play Thursday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. with the opponent to still be determined. For all SBC Volleyball Championship information, please click here.
