2016 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship
Arlington, Texas -- College Park Center
Nov. 18, 2016
Little Rock vs. UT Arlington
UT Arlington Head Coach Diane Seymour
Opening statement …
"Exciting performance by my team tonight, they were prepared to face a tough Little Rock team that we had beaten twice this season. It is always hard to beat someone three times. There was a lot of great energy by our team and across the board all of our eight or nine that see a lot of playing time played well and that’s a good sign for us."
On the double-double from Qiana Canete …
"Another double-double by her and you know I mentioned it to some people that have asked, ‘what’s it going take for us to win this weekend?’ and I point-blank said 'Qiana Canete playing good volleyball for six rotations,' and she did that, she blocked well, she served well. Obviously offensively she did well, she came up with some big digs and just really mentally was into it. Great performance by her, she’s capable of it with the kind of athlete she is."
On winning the match in three sets …
"The first set I think was closer than maybe the score indicated at 25-19 I think it was. The second set was very interesting. They took a big lead, we battled back. Then we got in front of them at 17-14 I want to say and they battled to go to 20-17 and we closed it out at 25-21. So that was definitely a very close set. Then we kind of handled things during the third set but it was a well fought set on both sides."
On facing league champion Arkansas State in the SBC Championship semifinals …
"Yeah, well we’ve been talking about it all week that the road to the conference title goes through Arkansas, so we’ll face the other one tomorrow. You know the thing about Arkansas State is that they are so highly efficient offensively and don’t make a lot of mistakes. We’re going to have to be near perfect tomorrow to play at least as well as we did tonight, probably a little bit better to be able to slow down their transition game."
On the four quarterfinal matchups being sweeps …
"We all finished in the right spots, I guess. No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 finished in the right spot. Usually this match No. 4 vs. No. 5 is a tighter one, but I just think we had a little bit of an athletic advantage over Little Rock this year. A little bit different than we did a year ago. A good performance by everybody today and you know, I guess everybody held the right seed."
On the importance of coming down in the second set, down 20-17 …
"It’s huge and it’s something we haven’t that well done all year. We’ve done it a lot of times where we’ve gone out and won the first set, then come out really sluggish and slow in the second set and haven’t recovered and lost the next two after that. It was huge for us and exactly what I told them at the intermission. I’ve been waiting to see that kind of response all year because we’re going to need it the rest of the weekend. It’s only going to get tougher beating Arkansas State tomorrow getting through that facing Coastal or Texas State, you’re probably not going to play from the lead from start to finish and you’re going to have to find that energy to fight back."
