UTA SWEEPS BEARKATS TO ADVANCE TO SLC TOURNANMENT SEMIFINALS

BEAUMONT, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington advanced to the semifinal round of the 2004 Southland Conference volleyball tournament with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-24) sweep of sixth-seeded Sam Houston State Friday evening. The Mavericks will face regular season co-champion Texas State at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
UTA closed out a back-and-forth first game with three straight points to edge past the Bearkats, 30-27. SHSU led by as many as three twice but couldn't hold off UTA's Morgan Rogers and Ashley Van Antwerp as the two combined for 11 of the Mavericks 20 kills.
The Mavericks led by as many as seven in game two but SHSU climbed back to tie the game 25 after two straight kills by Alisha Fowler. UTA closed out the game with a 5-0 run to take a two game advantage into the locker room.
UTA carried the momentum into game three, rolling to a 30-24 victory despite a late effort by the Bearkats.
Van Antwerp paced the Mavericks with 17 kills and completed her 21st double-double of the year with 12 digs. Joining Van Antwerp in double-figure kills was Rogers (13) and Caley Smith (12). Smith and Rogers led the defense with 17 digs apiece while Torie Dacus and Heather Dunn chipped in 15 and 12, respectively.
The Mavericks will face off with regular season co-champion Texas State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
