SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UT Arlington volleyball team fell 3-1 against the No. 1 seed Utah State Aggies in the WAC Conference Tournament Monday at UTSA's Convocation Center.
"It was a well played and hard fought match by both teams," UTA head coach Diane Seymour said. "But their experience and their size helped them take this match."
The Mavericks started the first set with energy and they continued to bring it throughout the set. Sophomores Ashley Bennett and Taylor Gross finished the set with a combined seven kills, as UTA took the set in a close 26-24 battle.
UT Arlington trailed in the beginning of the second set, but a 3-0 run from the Mavs tied the set at 8-all. Utah State went on a 5-0 run before the Mavericks were able to pick up another point. UT Arlington went on a late 4-0 run to trail by one, but the Aggies wouldn’t let up and took the set 25-23.
A kill from Bennett snapped Utah State’s 4-0 run and a block from Charmaine Whitmore brought the Mavericks within two in the third set, but the Aggies took the next point for the 6-3 lead. The Mavericks picked up four more before the Aggies found their rhythm, which allowed Utah State to take the third set 25-19.
The fourth set went back and forth early with several lead changes. Utah State pulled away, but UT Arlington came back and took the 17-16 lead. The Aggies had two 4-0 runs to take the fourth set 25-19 and the match.
"We played very young and we are very young but overall it was a very good season," UT Arlington head coach Diane Seymour said.
UT Arlington completed the 2012 season with a 9-22 overall record and a 5-13 conference record.
