UTA heads to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year after winning the Southland Conference Tournament and earning the automatic berth. The Mavericks will look to avenge their first loss of the 2002 season as the Wildcats defeated UTA in its first match of the year. Arizona handed the Mavericks a four-game loss (30-21, 27-30, 30-18, 30-28) on August 30 at the University of Louisville Tournament.
With a win against the Wildcats, the Mavericks will face the winner of the Texas vs. Indiana match on Friday, December 6. The Mavericks enter the NCAA tournament with a 26-6 record having won five of their last six matches. UTA's remarkable season included a 17-match winning streak, an undefeated home record, a Southland Conference regular season title and the SLC Tournament title. The Mavericks became the first squad since 1994 to win the regular season title and the tournament title in the same year. UTA will look to carry its success into this weekend's NCAA regional in Tucson, Arizona.
