Wenger enters his first season at the helm of the Mavericks, after a decorated tenure as one of the nation's top young assistants at UCLA, Colorado and Michigan State. A former star at UCLA, Wenger has built a high-quality staff, including assistant coaches Austin D'Amore and Courtney McDonald, in addition to former UTA standout Caitlyn Cooney serving as a graduate assistant coach.
The first edition of the Wenger Volleyball Camps were held over the week at the Maverick Activities Center on the UTA campus.
"Camps were fantastic. We had a great turnout and the level in the gym was high," Wenger said. "All of our campers were able to make some great gains. It was wonderful to have a lot of Arlington campers and kids from the Metroplex in general. We were even able to expand into some other areas of Texas and welcome some kids from out of the region. We were really happy with the turnout and the local contingency."
All of the coed camps featured instruction from the UTA coaching staff, and current and former student-athletes.
"It is great being able to watch our current athletes be able to coach the younger campers," Wenger said. "To see their take on the game and watch them become passionate about what they do, in working with the kids. This is the first step as we get into the fall, coming down the pike pretty quick."
Wenger's first season is just days away as the Mavs report for preseason training on Aug. 8, in advance of the season opening UTA Invitational at College Park Center, starting on Aug. 25.
"Eager and ready to get in the gym," Wenger said. "It is a lot of waiting around at this point, getting ready for August 8 but we have been preparing for a while and are eager to get it rolling."
