Thursday morning at Arlington Hall, they were teaming up on a television, lifting it into a student's dorm.
It was all part of the Mavs Move, a morning when student-athletes take a couple of hours and help incoming freshmen move into student housing on campus. Volleyball players split into groups and tackled move-in chores at Brazos, Trinity and Lipscomb. Softball players could be seen unloading flat-bed carts at Arlington Hall while men's basketball players were lending a hand at Kalpana Chawla Hall in the morning.
Baseball players enjoyed some heavy lifting at Kalpana Chawla in the afternoon.
Student-athletes said that helping their fellow Mavericks on move-in day was satisfying because it's fun to pitch in, but they admitted that there also was another motive - getting to know students and encouraging them to attend this season's events.
"Helping out the freshman is good for the athletic department because they will want to attend our games by us interacting with them," women's basketball player Shalyn Martin said. "It also makes us more approachable on campus if they need anything, so then they'll get to know us."
The first opportunity to see UT Arlington athletes on the court is Aug. 29, when the volleyball team opens the season in Denton against Jackson State. The volleyball team's hope opener is Sept. 10 against TCU at Texas Hall.
