ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball fans can get their first look at the 2014 squad Saturday afternoon during the annual Blue-White scrimmage at College Park Center.
The match is free and open to the public. Doors open at noon, fans can enter through the West Entrance with first serve set for 1 p.m.
"I feel that we are ready to play someone besides ourselves," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "There are still some things that we need to improve on, but overall we are ready."
UT Arlington volleyball opens the 2014 season Friday, Aug. 29 in the College Park Maverick Classic at CPC. The Mavericks face Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. The two-day tournament runs through Aug. 30 and includes Denver and Jackson State. The complete schedule is available here on UTAMavs.com.
UT Arlington volleyball ended the 2013 campaign with a 19-15 overall record, while earning a 10-8 mark in Sun Belt Conference play. The Mavericks hadn't won at least 19 matches in a season since finishing 19-11 in 2007.
"We're really trying to focus on ourselves and play good volleyball every night as we get more comfortable playing in the Sun Belt," Seymour said. "I think the success we had last year is a good indication of where we stack up."
UT Arlington was picked to finish fourth in the 2014 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last season the Mavericks we're picked sixth, but exceeded expectations as they finished fourth and went on to the SBC Conference championship match.
The Mavericks return 10 players from last season including four starters with Taylor Gross, Ashley Bennett, Amanda Welsh and Caitlyn Cooney. The team also welcomes six new players with four freshmen (Qiana Canete, Savannah Hall, Zhanelle Geathers, Ashlynn Ford) one transfer (Kaitlyn Granger)and a junior (Jordan Holub). Ganger will sit out the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Holub spent two seasons with the women's basketball team before joining the volleyball program.
Season and individual tickets for the 2014 UT Arlington volleyball season are now on sale at utatickets.com and by calling the College Park Center box office at 817-272-9595. Season tickets are $40 for all 17 home matches at College Park Center.
Single game tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for UTA students. UT Arlington students also have the option to buy the Mavericks All-Sports Pass for $25 payable on MyMav. This pass allows entry to all home athletic events during the 2014-15 academic year, which includes men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball.
