ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball returns to the court in the Baylor Classic tournament in Waco on Friday and Saturday.
UTA is looking to bounce back from a 3-1 mid-week loss to North Texas in its first road match of the season (25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 20-25). The Mavericks (3-1) swept three matches on their way to winning the 2013 UTA Hilton Invitational during the season’s opening weekend.
Sophomore defensive specialist Caitlyn Cooney earned tournament MVP honors to go along with being named to the all-tournament team. Juniors Taylor Gross (outside hitter) and Amanda Welsh (setter) were also named to the all-tournament team.
The Mavs open the Baylor Classic with a match against Mississippi State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. UTA leads the all-time series with the Bulldogs 2-0, with the last win coming Sept. 4, 2010 in Arlington by a 3-1 margin (25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17).
UTA faces tournament host Baylor at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Mavs lead the Bears 19-7 all-time, with the last victory coming in Arlington in 2004 (23-30, 31-29, 23-30, 30-28, 17-15).
The Mavericks will conclude the Baylor Classic with Tulsa at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Golden Hurricanes are the only weekend opponent with a winning all-time record against UTA. The Mavs trail Tulsa 2-1 in program history with the last matchup being a straight set loss coming Sept. 2, 2011 in Tulsa (17-25, 27-25, 11-25).
