ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington returns home to play its home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 10, against TCU at 7 p.m. at Texas Hall. The Mavericks have played their opening seven matches away from Arlington, with their most recent tournament in San Francisco against Utah State, San Francisco and UC-Santa Barbara. The Mavericks finished the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge in third place with a 1-2 record. TCU has started the season 6-0, marking the best start in program history.
Sophomore outside hitter Bianca Sauls continued her solid play last weekend, earning her second All-Tournament selection. Sauls recorded 22 kills (2.2 kills per set) with a .340 hitting percentage in 47 swings. She notched 23 digs and seven blocks with two aces in San Francisco.
The Mavs will try and bounce back after a 1-3 record last week, with all three losses coming in three-set sweeps against SMU, San Francisco and UC-Santa Barbara. In four matches last week the Mavericks tallied a .181 hitting percentage while their opponents hit .320. Freshman Tara Frantz had an impressive week with a team-high 35 kills (3.18 kps), including a season-best 15 kills against Utah State.
Last season UT Arlington defeated Louisiana Tech in its home opener. Overall, the Mavs are 18-7 in home openers.
INSIDE THE SERIES:
Wednesday's match marks the eighth meeting between UT Arlington and TCU... the Mavericks lead the all-time series 5-2... TCU won the last match-up, 3-1, in Forth Worth on Sept. 5, 2007... the Mavericks have won two of the last three meetings, including their last win, a 3-2 victory on Aug. 29, 2006, at Texas Hall... the Mavericks have never lost to the Horned Frogs in Arlington.
ABOUT THE TCU HORNED FROGS:
TCU is a perfect 6-0, marking the best start in its program's history. The Horned Frogs are coming off a tournament championship at UT Pan American, where they swept Prairie View A&M and UT Pan American to claim the tourney title.
Sophomore outside hitter Irene Hester (29 kills, 10 digs) was named Tournament Most Valuable Player, and junior middle blocker Kourtney Edwards, who leads TCU in blocks, tallied nine kills and five blocks against UT Pan American.
TCU is 18-1 in all sets played this season, needing to play four sets against Belmont on Aug. 30. The Horned Frogs lead the Mountain West with a .332 hitting percentage.
