VB: Whitmore named Defensive Player of the Week

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore was named Defensive Player of the Week the Sun Belt Conference announced Monday.
"Charmaine was outstanding this weekend," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "We have really been working on our blocking for the past six months and she has been focusing on being an impact for us. Her hard work paid off."
The Fort Smith, Arkansas native started every set for the Mavericks in four matches last week. UT Arlington went 1-3 in its first road matches of the season and currently sits at 4-3 overall.
The Mavs fell to North Texas in Denton, 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 20-25). In the loss, Whitmore tallied seven total blocks, one solo and six assists, for an average of 1.75 per set.
UTA then traveled to Waco for the Baylor Classic and took on Mississippi State in its first match. The Mavericks fell to the Bulldogs 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25). Once again, Whitmore notched seven total blocks, all assisted, for an average of 1.75 per set.
The Mavericks defeated tournament host Baylor, 3-1 (25-18, 25-27, 25-12, 25-17). Whitmore posted 12 total blocks in the victory, all assisted, averaging 3.00 per set. The 12 total blocks were one shy of a career-high 13 she set last season against Utah State on Nov. 19.
In the final match of the weekend, UT Arlington fell to Tulsa in straight sets (25-21, 27-29, 25-19). Whitmore was dominant at the net with seven total blocks, two solo and five assisted, for an average of 2.33 per set. She was named defensive MVP of the Baylor Classic.
In UTA's four matches last week, Whitmore averaged 2.20 blocks per set with 33 total, three solo and 30 assisted. This is Whitmore's first player of the week honor at UT Arlington. She is also the first Maverick to earn a Sun Belt Conference honor since joining the conference July 1, 2013.
