ARLINGTON, Texas -- After a rugged two-week road swing, the UTA volleyball team will return home to host a five-team Maverick Classic Tournament, with the Mavs facing off with UC Davis on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT, presented by the Texas Trust Credit Union, at the College Park Center.
UTA will open the tournament with UC Davis on Thursday, presented by Texas Trust, before a four-match Friday at College Park Center. UC Davis will face Lamar at 10 a.m., Houston Baptist will face UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. and Lamar vs. Arizona State will start at 5 p.m. The Mavs will host Houston Baptist on Friday to conclude the day at 7 p.m. Saturday will start with Arizona State vs. Houston Baptist at 10 a.m., with UTA facing Lamar at 12 p.m. and Arizona State at 6 p.m.
Every game of the Maverick Classic, including games not involving UTA, will be streamed live on UTAMavs.com, with the Voice of UTA Volleyball Josh Sours calling the action.
UTA (5-4) completed a two-week road swing last weekend in the University of New Mexico's Lobo Classic. The trip to Albuquerque came a week after the Mavs won the Belmont Bruiser Classic in Nashville, Tenn., with wins over Middle Tennessee and Idaho State. UTA suffered losses at New Mexico, Northern Colorado and Portland in the Lobo Classic.
As a team, UTA has 11.9 kills and 13.9 digs per set, hitting .189 and holding opponents to a .197 hitting percentage. The Mavs are averaging 1.2 service aces per set and 1.3 blocks per set. The Mavs have been paced offensively by senior Qiana Canete, a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection. Canete, a native of Copperas Cove, Texas, has 3.09 kills and 3.03 digs per set, accounting for 104.5 points. Junior Zhanelle Geathers leads the team with 3.84 kills per set, hitting .205 and owning 1.74 digs per set, with her 54 digs a new career high. Freshman Kailyn Gilbreath leads the team with 8.62 assists per set, adding 1.77 digs per set. Sophomores Kylie Jedlicka and Madison McConnell have helped spur the offense, with McConnell owning a .365 attacking percentage and Jedlicka owning 1.75 kills and 2.55 digs per set. Madelyn St. Germain leads the team with 3.48 digs per set.
Arizona State (7-2) has opened up the year with wins in its home tournament, before a two-week road swing that saw the Sun Devils earn wins over Nevada, CSU Bakersfield, Northern Arizona and Utah State, suffering back-to-back losses vs. Gonzaga and Portland State. ASU has hit for a .250 attacking percentage in 2017, with Oluma Okaro leading the team with 4.78 kills per set.
Houston Baptist (7-1) is off to a strong start to the season, averaging 13.9 kills and 16.1 digs per set, while hitting for a .264 percentage. Baily Banks paces the Huskies with 3.31 kills per set.
Lamar (1-5) has averaging 12.1 kills and 12.55 digs per set, while hitting for a .147 percentage. Murielle Hlavac leads the team with 2.95 kills per set and owning 2.60 digs per set.
UC Davis (5-5) is coming off a weekend trip that saw the Aggies suffer losses to Portland State and Santa Clara, around a five-set win over Boise State. UC Davis opened the year with wins over Eastern Washington, UNLV and Binghamton. The Aggies have averaged 13 kills per set and 16.3 digs per set. Emily Allen paces UC Davis with 2.84 kills per set and 3.03 digs per set.
The Mavs are meeting UC Davis for the second time in program history after a three-set los to the Aggies in Tulsa, Okla., in 2011. HBU leads the series with UTA, 2-0, with both meetings coming in Arlington. HBU won the last meeting in five sets in 2016. The Mavs lead the all-time series with Lamar, 50-28-2, including a 23-3 all-time record in games played at home. This marks the first meeting between the teams since 2011.
