TEXAS-ARLINGTON VOLLEYBALL TO BEGIN SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE PLAY
Sept. 16, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington will begin the road to defending its Southland Conference title tonight (Tuesday, September 16) when the Mavericks face Stephen F. Austin in the league opener for both squads. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
The Mavericks enter the match with a 2-6 record after finishing arguably the toughest non-conference schedule in the league which included facing top ranked competition such as Long Beach State, Texas, UCLA and UC-Santa Barbara.
"The tough non-conference schedule we played did nothing but good things for us, we experienced more intense games and a faster style of play," said head coach Janine Smith.
Owners of a 4-7 record, the Ladyjacks visit Arlington after snapping a four-match losing streak by sweeping UT-Chattanooga at the SMU Invitational last weekend. Leading the SFA offense is preseason all-conference selection Brittany Burton averaging 3.03 kills per game.
In 2002, the Mavericks finished atop the league with an 18-2 mark, while SFA finished in third place with a 14-6 conference record. The squads split the meetings last season with each team winning on its home floor. In Nacogdoches, the Ladyjacks snapped UTA's 17-match winning streak when they handed the Mavericks a four-game loss, their first in league action.
