ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball travels to Boone, N.C. this weekend to participate in its final tournament before Sun Belt play begins.
The Mavericks (5-5) are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the 2013 Hilton Maverick Classic. UTA swept Mississippi Valley State, while falling to UTSA (3-1) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-0). Senior outside hitter Shelby Dickson earned all-tournament honors.
UT Arlington will open the Black and Gold Challenge against Denver (5-4) Friday at 4 p.m. The Mavs trail the Pioneers 2-0 all-time, with both losses coming last season as Western Athletic Conference opponents.
The Mavs will face tournament host Appalachian State (7-4) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and East Carolina (6-5) at 4 p.m. These matches will mark the first meetings in program history with the Mountaineers and Pirates
“We’re looking forward to kicking off the tournament against Denver,” UTA coach Diane Seymour said. “We played two close matches with them last year. It will be a challenge to play back-to-back Saturday, but we’re looking forward to the trip to the east coast.”
The Mavericks will depend on solid defense from senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore, who is currently ranked 15th in the nation in blocks per set (1.51). She was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9.
