September 24, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks open play in the Southland Conference this weekend with a road trip to south Texas against UTSA (Friday, Sept. 26) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Saturday, Sept. 27).
The Mavs finished the non-conference portion of their schedule last weekend hosting the UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational at Texas Hall against three opponents that combined boast a 27-9 overall record.
UT Arlington has dropped eight of its last nine matches overall, despite playing a schedule that features many tough non-conference opponents, including San Francisco, UC-Santa Barbara, TCU, Duke, No. 13 Middle Tennessee, New Mexico, UALR and Houston.
Senior outside hitter Ally Wade recently led the Mavericks with a career-high 16 kills against New Mexico in the final match of the UT Arlington/Holiday Inn Invitational. Wade is leading the team averaging 2.47 kills per game and with 106 total kills.
Freshman middle blocker Christy Driscoll ranks second on the team with 38 total blocks (0.75 bps), and she is coming off earning all-tournament recognition at the Holiday Inn Invitational. Driscoll marked a career-high 12 kills against UALR last Friday.
In addition, freshman outside hitter Amanda Aguilera became the first UT Arlington player in two years to record five service aces in a single match (vs. New Mexico).
The Mavericks open their conference slate against UTSA, a team they have defeated in four of the last five meetings. The Mavs lead the all-time series verses the Roadrunners with a 25-9 advantage, despite an even 8-8 series record in San Antonio. The Mavericks and Islanders have a brief history that UT Arlington has dominated with a 7-0 record. The last meeting was a 3-2 victory by UT Arlington in Corpus Christi.
