ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball travels to Atlanta, Ga. and Bowling Green, Ky. this weekend for its first Sun Belt road matches of the season.
The Mavericks (9-6, 2-0 SBC) face Georgia State (5-11, 0-2 SBC) on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on Western Kentucky (12-4, 2-0 SBC) on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Hilltoppers are currently receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top-25 poll, last updated Sept. 30, 2013.
"We expect Georgia State to be a very scrappy team as they forced two five set matches to start conference against UALR and Arkansas State," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "Western Kentucky will be a little more physical of a team but luckily, they do not have a size advantage over us. They are simply a very good team that makes little to no errors when they play."
UTA opened conference play with a 3-1 victory against University of Louisiana at Monroe and a sweep over University of Louisiana at Lafayette at College Park Center last weekend.
Senior outside hitter Shelby Dickson recorded her fourth and fifth double-double performances this past weekend. Against ULM, she tallied 12 kills and 13 digs, as well as 10 kills and 12 digs against UL Lafayette. Setters Amanda Welsh (junior) and Cassidy Wheeler (freshman) are the only other Mavs with double-double matches this season, each with three.
Senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore led UTA in total blocks in both matches last weekend. She is currently ranked fourth in the nation in blocks per set (1.56).
UT Arlington leads the all-time series against Georgia State 1-0. The solo victory (3-0) over the Panthers came in 2007 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Mavs also lead the all-time series against Western Kentucky 1-0. The 3-0 win came in Lexington, Ky. in 1987.
