VB: Mavs Travel to Arkansas State, Little Rock

ARLINGTON, Texas --
The UTA volleyball team continues its season-long, five-match road swing with a pair of tests, facing Arkansas State at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday and Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Friday's match at Arkansas State will be streamed live on ESPN3.com 

UTA (8-9, 2-2 Sun Belt Conference) is in the midst of a five-long road swing to open its league portion of the road schedule. The Mavs split a pair last weekend, posting a three-set win over Appalachian State on Sunday after a three-set sweep at the hands of league front-runner Coastal Carolina on Friday.

The Mavs have totaled a .202 attacking percentage as a team in 2017, with 12.1 kills, 11.3 assists, 14.6 digs and 1.3 blocks per set. UTA has been paced offensively by senior Qiana Canete, who is a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection and one of only three players in program history to rank in the top-10 in career digs and kills. Canete, a native of Copperas Cove, Texas, has averaged 3.43 kills per set and 3.03 digs per set as a senior in 2017.

UTA junior Zhanelle Geathers leads the team with 3.55 kills per set, hitting .184 and adding 1.18 digs per set. Sophomore Madison McConnell paces the club with a .310 hitting percentage, owning 1.67 kills per set and a team-leading 0.59 blocks per set, ranking third on the team in total points. Freshman setter Kailyn Gilbreath sports a team-high nine assists per set – leading all Sun Belt freshmen and ranking 22nd in the nation. Freshman Tessa Harfield has 57 kills and 31 blocks, with sophomore Kylie Jedlicka sporting 1.73 kills and 2.39 digs per set. Libbie Vickers leads the team with 3.48 digs per set.


 

 

Little Rock (5-11, 1-3 Sun Belt Conference) is coming off a weekend split in its two matches in Louisiana, winning in three sets at ULM and suffering a four-set loss at the Ragin Cajuns. The Trojans have totaled a .208 attacking percentage as a team, averaging 12 kills, 10.8 assists and 14.1 digs per set, owning 2.4 blocks per set. Little Rock has been led by Mariana Avram, who is hitting .192 with 2.97 kills and 2.13 digs per set. Taylor Lindberg averaging 9.16 assists per set and Sydnee Martin leads the team with 4.28 assists per set.

Arkansas State (9-8, 2-2 Sun Belt) is coming off a weekend split in its trip to Louisiana, earning a three-set win over ULM and suffering a five-set loss at the Cajuns. Arkansas State has played a rugged schedule which included wins over Ole Miss, UCF, Georgetown and Cincinnati.  The Red Wolves have hit for a .219 percentage and are averaging 13.3 kills, 13.4 assists, 15.6 digs and two blocks per set. Carlisa May leads the team with 3.87 kills per set, Sheridan Webb has 11.25 assists per set, with Ellie Watkins owning 11.12 assists per set. Tatum Ticknor leads the team with 5.22 digs per set.

UTA leads the all-time series with Arkansas State, 9-7 with the series tied in Jonesboro, Ark., 3-3. Arkansas State has won four straight meetings in the series. UTA also leads the series with Little Rock, 13-10, with the series tied 2-2 in Little Rock and the Mavs winning three straight meetings.
