ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball continues its five-match homestand at College Park Center by hosting UALR on Friday at 7 p.m. and Arkansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
"Hopefully we continue to ride the high after beating Texas State," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "We knew this was going to be a difficult week playing three opponents that were ranked above us in the preseason poll. We are very confident in our start in the Sun Belt Conference but we realize it will be a battle day in and day out."
The Mavericks (11-7, 4-1 SBC) defeated Texas State 3-2 on Wednesday night at College Park Center. The victory ended a drought of five consecutive losses to the Bobcats dating back to 2010.
Senior outside hitter Shelby Dickson recorded her seventh double-double match of the season against Texas State in kills (13) and digs (18). Her dig total was just two shy of sophomore defensive specialist Caitlyn Cooney's team-leading 20 in the match. Junior setter Amanda Welsh tallied a team-high 25 assists and three aces.
Junior outside hitter Taylor Gross led the Mavs with a .321 attack percentage and tied for a team-high eight total blocks (all assisted). Senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore also notched eight total blocks (all assisted) along with 12 kills. Whitmore currently sits at fourth in the nation in blocks per set (1.52).
UTA leads the all-time series with UALR (13-4, 5-0 SBC) 8-5. The Mavericks defeated the Trojans 3-1 in Arlington in 2010. UALR junior outside hitter Edina Begic is currently ranked second in the nation in kills per set (5.59).
The Mavericks also lead the all-time series with Arkansas State (7-12, 3-2 SBC) 7-1. UTA outlasted the Red Wolves in five-sets in Arlington in 2009.
