ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington volleyball begins the second half of Sun Belt Conference play at Arkansas State on Friday at 7 p.m. and at UALR on Saturday at 7 p.m.
"It's going to be a tough go of it here in the second half as we play some pretty tough opponents and mostly on the road," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "But we're looking forward to the challenge after finishing the front half at 6-3. We want to duplicate or better that and put us in a situation where we get a good seed in the conference tournament."
The Mavericks (13-9, 6-3 SBC) went 2-0 last weekend to close out a five-match conference homestand at College Park Center. UTA swept South Alabama (25-21, 25-16, 25-22) and narrowly defeated Troy (25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 19-17) in five sets.
Senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore maintained her spot at second in the nation in blocks per set (1.62) for the second straight week. Whitmore also has 120 block assists this season, which puts her at ninth on UTA's all-time single-season list. Gina Kalb is eighth with 122 (2007) and Michele Humbach is seventh with 126 (1983).
Freshman Cassidy Wheeler followed Whitmore into the record books with 318 assists this season, putting her at sixth on the freshman single-season list. Wheeler's teammate Amanda Welsh is fifth with her 2011 assist total of 1,074.
UT Arlington leads the all-time series against Arkansas State 7-2. The Mavs fell to the Red Wolves on Oct. 12 this season in Arlington (25-23, 17-25, 27-25, 13-25, 15-13). UTA leads the all-time series against UALR 8-6. The Mavericks were defeated by the Trojans on Oct. 11 in Arlington (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22).
