ARLINGTON, Texas – Sophomore Caitlyn Cooney picked up conference honors this week as she was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Cooney, a defensive specialist, picked up a career and season high 35 digs in a 3-1 win over UALR on Saturday, adding to her total of 19 put up in Friday’s sweep of Arkansas State.
“She played outstanding all weekend,” UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. “To see her rise to the occasion on the road in two big matches is a great sign for us and her future play. She made adjustments to the opponents and was very competitive.”
The sophomore libero averaged 6.33 digs per set against Arkansas State and 8.75 against UALR. The weekend performance moved Cooney into fourth in the SBC in digs, averaging 4.36 per set.
Taking both matches over the weekend, UTA moved into a tie with UALR for second place in the conference.
The Mavericks return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Texas State. UTA closed out their 2013 home slate this weekend with matches against Georgia State at 6 p.m. on Friday and first place Western Kentucky on Saturday at 3 p.m.
