MAVERICK VOLLEYBALL INKS TWO
Nov. 10, 2005
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington volleyball team signed two local standouts Wednesday morning for Early-Signing Day. Arlington Martin's Raegan Daniel and Plano West's Teena Sobczak both signed to play for the Mavericks next season.
Daniel, a 5-10 senior setter at Arlington Martin High School is an all-district selection this season for the Lady Warriors who just advanced to the regional semifinals in Abilene this weekend where they will take on Abilene High School on Friday evening. Daniel was also an AAU All-American in 2003 where she guided the North Dallas Juniors to a silver medal.
"We actually offered a scholarship to her during her sophomore season and fortunately she has decided to stay locally after her high school career," UTA head coach Diane Seymour said. "She has pretty good size for a setter and a great understanding of the game. I know that she will put up a huge challenge to start next season with her ability."
Sobczak, a 6-0 outside hitter from Plano West High School is an all-district selection this season for the Lady Wolves who advanced to the area round of the state playoffs before falling to Daniel's Martin squad. Sobczak was named all-district honorable mention her sophomore and junior seasons, along with winning Plano West's "Best Server Award" her junior season. At the 2005 Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sobczak was named all-america and was selected to the all-tournament team as she helped the North Dallas Juniors to a 3rd-place finish.
"Teena is a very talented outside hitter that we have had our eye for a while," Seymour said. "She has good size and she passes the ball real well. Her ability to pass and play defense is something that we are very excited about."
The Mavericks are back in action this weekend when they host Southeastern Louisiana on Friday and Nicholls State on Saturday. Both contest will take place at Texas Hall and first-serve is set for 7 p.m.
