UT Arlington Game Notes
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Winners of three of its last four matches, UT Arlington volleyball will conclude its regular season with a pair of weekend matches on the road, traveling to face Louisiana on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT before facing off with UL Monroe on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
UT Arlington (14-15, 8-6 Sun Belt Conference) sits in fourth place in the league table entering the final weekend of the regular season. UTA has won three of its last four matches, with the lone loss coming in a four-set setback at league-leader Arkansas State on Nov. 4. UTA has claimed 10 of its last 13 sets.
The two-match road swing through Louisiana will conclude the regular season and set up the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship, hosted by the Mavs on Nov. 18-20 at College Park Center.
The Mavs have wins against both of their weekend foes in 2016, sweeping ULM on Oct. 28 and sweeping Louisiana on Oct. 29 at College Park Center. UTA leads the series with UL, 15-1 and owns a 44-3 all-time mark in matches played against ULM.
Last weekend, UTA suffered the four-set loss at Arkansas State but snapped ASU's 24-set winning streak in claiming the third set. UTA then rebounded to post a five-set win over Little Rock to conclude its road swing, getting 20 kills and just one error from junior standout Qiana Canete.
"We battled the entire weekend," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "Even against Arkansas State there may have been a couple of sets that were a little one sided but our court presence was better than what it was in the past. We didn't give up. It was a good, hard-fought match on Friday, wish we had been able to take it to five (sets), but then leading into the Sunday match, obviously we came out on top against a very tough Little Rock team. We tend to play some tight matches with them and we hadn't won in about three years there. It was nice to come out with a win and have to battle in a close match. That is something that is good for us down the stretch. Obviously you want to win as many as you can but to come out in a tight battle against a talented team shows something for your team's confidence."
Louisiana (9-19, 5-9 SBC) has been led in kills per set by Stacey Reilly (3.29), with Jessica Bartcyszyn owning 9.48 assists per set and Sydney Davis charting 4.07 digs per set.
UL Monroe (9-22, 3-10 SBC) has been led in kills per set by Hope Pawlik (2.84), with Tara Jenkins contributing 7.02 assists per set and Kacey LeBlanc owning 4.41 digs per set.
"We have to stay sharp (this weekend)," Seymour said. "That is what we talked about yesterday with a short practice. It doesn't matter if you are a starter or a non starter, we are focused on ourselves and being as good as we can be. Making sure we take care of business down the stretch and get three wins at home."
UT Arlington has had a strong season from Canete, who leads the club with 2.93 kills per set, while adding 3.63 digs per set. Senior setter Cassidy Wheeler has led the team with 7.57 assists per set and freshman libero Taylor Murata owns a club-high 4.18 digs per set.
