WACO, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams each took 13th place at the NCAA South Central Region Championships at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas on Saturday morning. Senior Idilio Campos led the Mavericks with a 13th place finish with a time of 31:18.4, marking his top 10K time this fall. The men's race was won by Texas A&M (39 points) with Arkansas (44 points) also qualifying for the National Championships at Indiana State University with a second-place finish.
Top individuals in the men's 10K were Shadrack Songok (29:52.1 - Texas A&M), Samuel Kosgei (29:55.5 - Lamar) and Scott McPherson (30:07.2 - Arkansas). Each individual runner from Texas A&M and Arkansas qualified for the National Championships, along with the top four runners outside of runners from Texas A&M and Arkansas, which included Kosgei, Festus Kigen (30:35.0 - TCU), Jake Morse (30:36.9 - Texas) and Francis Kasagule (30:59.8 - Lamar).
Campos' time of 31:18.4 was next in line for runners outside of the top two teams.
UT Arlington had a total of five men's runners finish inside of the top 100, as Ivan Pinal (70th - 33:31.3), Zach Zura (84th - 33:57.5), Ozie Hood (87th - 34:18.9) and Heinz Schwarzkopf (92nd - 34:28.5) all joined Campos.
The women's 6K meet was won by Arkansas with 51 total points. Baylor and Rice tied for second place with 61 points, but Rice claimed the berth to the National Championships due to winning a tie breaker.
The women's individual champion was Rice's Nicole Mericle (20:34.7). Erin Bedell (20:41.4) from Baylor and Christina Munoz (20:43.3) from Texas A&M rounded out the top three with second and third place finishes, respectively.
