Arlington, Texas -
More than 900 student-athletes have been named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday.
The 932 student-athletes named to the spring honor roll matches last year's record as the longest honor roll in conference history. This year's list boasts 12 student-athletes of the year, four players of the year and a total of 140 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester.
The honor roll includes student athletes who took part in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
UT Arlington is headlined on the honor roll by Daiana Negreanu, the 2011 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, who recorded a 3.63 GPA in management broadcasting. Negreanu coasted to a 10-1 record at No. 1 singles in conference play and earned first-team all conference in both singles and doubles play (8-1).
Baseball senior Jesse Payne, the UT Arlington Male Scholar-Athlete, turned in a 3.2 GPA as an English major, and Brittany Culbertson, the UT Arlington Female Scholar-Athlete, posted a 4.0 GPA in kinesiology and education.
The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA.
Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
