CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2007 season at the site of the 2007 Southland Conference Championships when they compete at the Islander Splash meet on Friday evening here.
The meet will feature a nontraditional shuttle-relay format over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi campus.
"(This meet) will give us an opportunity to see the conference course in a low-key competition," said UT Arlington Head Cross Country Coach John Sauerhage said. "The meet will give us a chance to get the season off to a nice start."
The men's team returns its top six runners from a year ago. Senior Jody Broccoli-Hickey (The Woodlands) and sophomore Armando Saldivar (Fort Worth, Texas) finished in the top 20 at last year's SLC Championship in Nacogdoches, Texas. Also returning are junior Ivan Pinal (Fort Worth, Texas) and Idilio Campos (Mission, Texas) and sophomore Ozie Hood (Mansfield, Texas).
Freshman Jose Balleza (Fort Worth, Texas) is expected to make an immediate contribution after top-10 finishes the last two seasons at the UIL Class 4A State Cross Country Championship.
The women's team returns sophomore Caroline Erlingson (Angelholm, Sweden) and senior Carranda Mose (Pearland, Texas). Mose finished at last year's conference meet. Erlingson, who recorded two top-30 finishes last season, will look to rebound after an injury-plagued 2006 season.
Transfer Magan Moore will figure into the top five. A standout at SMU last season, Moore will run her senior season with the Mavericks.
