Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington men's and women's cross country teams will get their first big test this weekend when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Splash.

After two straight weeks of competition, the Mavericks recovered with a bye last week where they used the time off to train.

"In distant running having a week off doesn't mean we rest, it just means they gave us more time to work," said Head Coach John Sauerhage. "The more running these two squads put in the better shape they are going to get in. This will be the race to let us know that we are really in cross country season."

The women will be going head-to-head against the defending Southland Conference champions while the men will compete against a strong UTSA squad that took third at the conference meet last season.

"We have two of the top teams in the conference that we will run against and that was one of the attractions to go down to Corpus Christi. If we run well against those two teams it will be a catalyst for some confidence building attitudes as we get closer to the conference championships," said Sauerhage.

Freshman Emily Koenig and sophomore Cody Widener have been leading the way for UT Arlington. Koenig is coming off a fifth place finish at the UT Arlington Season Opener and a first place finish at the Midwestern State Invitational.

Widener was at the head of the pack at the UTA Season Opener where he placed 11th overall.

Koenig and Widener top performances haven't gone unnoticed, both were named Cross Country Athletes of Week on Sept. 8 and Sept 14.

The field of teams for the women consists of Angelo State, UTPA, St. Mary's University, A&M-International, A&M-Kingsville, and UTSA. The men's field includes Angelo State, A&M-International, A&M-Kingsville, UTPA, and UTSA.

The meet will take place at West Guth Park, with the women beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and the men following immediately after.
