Sept. 25, 2009
ARLINGTON, Texas - Men and women's cross country produced solid results in one of the tougher meets of the year in Corpus Christi. The men finished third while the women finished fifth overall but for the first time against fellow Southland Conference teams.
The men were, for once, not led by freshman Eric Montou. Junior Zach Zura finished with a time of 26:54 which was good enough for 11th place. Montou was the only other Maverick to finish in the top 20 with a 20th place finish and a time of 27:11.
McNeese finished first overall by a good margin with 28 points. Second place was Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with 45 points. UTA finished with 109 points. McNeese had four runners finish in the top four
On the women's side, sophomore Jennifer Carey continued her strong running from the previous two meets to finish first for the Mavericks after two-second place team finishes. Her time of 17:57 placed her 15th while junior Amanda McMahon finished 19th with a time of 18:02. Like the men they were the only two runners from UTA to finish in the top 20.
Texas finished first overall in the standings with 28 points. Rice finished second with 42. The other two teams to finish above UTA were Southland teams, Corpus Christi and McNeese. UTA ended the night with 124 points.
Next up for the men and women will be the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla., at 9:00 a.m. on October 13.
